"Nature Tales" is a large-scale statue series themed around the three-dimensional realization of "all living creatures on Earth," supervised by Shinobu Matsumura, an authority on biological sculpting widely recognized both in Japan and abroad.
As the first lineup from extant terrestrial animals, the Giant Panda—beloved for its black-and-white pattern and cute gestures—makes its debut!
Giant pandas, protected as a rare species inhabiting only the mountainous regions of inland China, are known for their diet of bamboo. Although they are biologically omnivorous with a tendency toward carnivory, it is said they adapted this diet to inhabit bamboo forests where they have no natural predators. In Nature Tales, the panda is sculpted in a seemingly carefree pose, sitting and eating bamboo. The cub playing at its feet adds an irresistibly cute touch.
Along with the charm of a mascot character, the ecology of the wild animal is firmly expressed. Highlights include the mouth crushing hard bamboo, and the strength of the claws on its sturdy limbs, reminding us that it is classified as a bear. The black-and-white fur is also rendered with precise sculpting and painting, capturing the natural hues and the variations in coat texture across different parts of the body.
"Nature Tales Giant Panda" is a large statue approximately 39cm tall, capturing the realistic form of a creature that is famous but rarely observed properly. When people think of pandas, they think of the black-and-white pattern. The pattern around the eyes, in particular, can make them look completely different depending on the position and size, so I checked their expressions while drawing the patterns during the sculpting process.
I believe the reason for the panda's popularity, aside from its pattern, is its human-like behavior of "sitting" and "grabbing things to eat," so I reproduced both. The way they sit is different from humans; they lean back heavily from the lower half of their backs. Since pandas do not have specific dens, it is believed they raise their young in this posture even in the wild.
