Large-scale art statues by Kaiyodo, capturing creatures in nature.
Kaiyodo has brought the creatures of the Earth to life in various forms, including capsules, articulated figures, and soft vinyl. Now, we launch "NATURE TALES," a series of large-scale statues themed around all kinds of living things, designed to be appreciated as authentic art.
Shinobu Matsumura, a leading expert in biological sculpting, serves as the general director, with other renowned Kaiyodo sculptors showcasing their skills. As the first lineup, we are releasing three figures themed around large aquatic mammals, the whales, in sequence!
Each piece is an impressive 40cm-class size, featuring precise sculpting calculated for realism at that scale, and textures achieved through painting by professional finishers that evoke the very environment where the creatures live. Cotton gloves are included to help you handle the delicately painted figures with care. Each is released in a limited quantity, and the wooden-style base and the certificate in an envelope are delivered with a serial number and the artist's signature.
Often called the "gentlest creatures on Earth," the Right Whale became a primary target for whaling from the 17th to 19th centuries due to the utility of their blubber and baleen, making them an endangered species.
For "Nature Tales," we have sculpted the Southern Right Whale parent and child, a species considered to have a relatively recovering population among the three classifications. We have depicted a heartwarming scene: the parent whale supporting the calf, which is not yet used to swimming, from below, while a bottlenose dolphin has approached, perhaps out of curiosity. From the smooth texture of the back—the origin of its Japanese name "Semikujira" (Back-Beautiful Whale)—to the keratinized growths on its face called "callosities," and even the gentle, intelligent-looking eyes, the meticulous sculpting and painting bring the creature to life.
