Artist Profile
Born in Tokyo in 1924. Graduated from the Faculty of Economics, Keio University.
Entered Keio Futsubu and learned painting and etching from Kinpei Senba.
Studied under Genichiro Inokuma and Kazu Wakita while in the Keio University preparatory course.
Returned to university after the war and devoted himself to painting and puppet theater production.
During this time, he encountered Asian shadow puppetry, which greatly influenced his creative activities.
After graduation, he was recognized by Yasuji Hanamori, editor-in-chief of the magazine "Kurashi no Techo," and began serializing shadow art in the magazine in 1948.
In 1961, he founded a life-sized stuffed puppet theater and performed at Mokuba-za.
The TV program "Mokuba-za Hour" became explosively popular, and the character "Keroyon," who became a national idol, is still beloved today.
His shadow play "Night on the Galactic Railroad" was highly acclaimed both domestically and internationally, and he has since performed shadow plays all over the world. In recognition of his achievements, he received the Medal with Purple Ribbon and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
In 1983, his picture book won the Golden Apple Award at the BIB International Exhibition of Illustrations of Children's Books in Czechoslovakia.
Author of numerous books, including "The Mysterious Journey of the Wine Bottle," which are highly regarded around the world.
Held solo exhibitions in New York and Washington, USA, in 2004, which were featured in the New York Times and Washington Post. Held his first exhibition in South Korea the following year.
Since then, he has been actively holding exhibitions at art museums across Japan to this day.
