The ultimate Godzilla sculpting experience in a plastic model kit.
A newly sculpted Godzilla joins the "ARTPLA SCULPTURE WORKS" series, which brings masterpiece sculptures to life as plastic model kits!
The sculpting is handled by Shinobu Matsumura, a leading expert in natural history and biological sculpting.
While taking the promotional still photos from the 1954 "Godzilla" film as a starting point, this piece reconstructs and recreates the essence of the various Godzillas seen over the past 70 years. Rather than a mere reproduction of a suit or CG model, it depicts the form of an ancient giant creature appearing in Tokyo in three dimensions.
The sense of realism is heightened by the base, featuring the collapsed Nichigeki Theatre building and the JNR elevated railway tracks, along with Godzilla's pose as he clutches a train in his jaws.
Matsumura's soul-stirring sculpture is condensed into a fixed-pose plastic model kit across 8 runners. The organic and complex surface details are reproduced faithfully from the original sculpt. Despite the complex segmentation, the kit employs the same structure used in previous series releases, where surface parts are attached to a base body, ensuring sturdiness. The parts are molded with high precision to address the challenges of this method, resulting in a configuration where seam lines are inconspicuous.
The assembly process itself is enjoyable, and once completed, the kit serves as an ornament that stands up to display even in an unpainted, snap-fit state. Of course, for those who choose to paint it, the combination of the colossal creature Godzilla and the collapsed structures will surely spark your imagination for painting.
Painting example production: Shinobu Matsumura
Unlike the black tones of many subsequent Godzillas, the body color of Godzilla (1954) is often expressed in brown or gray tones, similar to the image on the movie poster. For this example, I chose a reddish-brown tone that seems to suit a burning city.
The base area around Yurakucho Station, excluding the Nichigeki Theatre, still retains much of the atmosphere of that time, so I painted it with that image in mind.
